Description

Hello everyone,

Please join us for our second Alumni Association meeting of 2019-20, where we will be joined by special guest Dr. Tanya Sharpe, who will present a talk titled, Survivors of Homicide Victims: Examining the Intersections of the Walking Wounded.

With increased numbers of homicide in Toronto, the media is beginning to profile the family, friends and communities that are impacted by the tragedy of homicide. Some individuals, families and communities have more spotlight than others but each survivor is impacted often in personal and psychological ways. What happens to the loved ones after the camera and the spotlight leaves? How do they recover from such a loss?

Speaker Bio

Dr. Sharpe joined the Factor-Inwentash Faculty in July 2018 after serving as an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Social Work for 11 years. She received her Ph.D. in Social Work from Boston College located in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Sharpe is a community-based researcher who is passionately committed to the development of culturally responsive approaches and sustainable opportunities allowing Black communities to thrive in the face of homicide violence. Her research examines sociocultural factors that influence the coping strategies of Black family members and friends of homicide victims.
